Early Childhood Expectations

These are some of the things that children will be expected to do in the Early Childhood Program at St. Joseph School.  As a parent, you can help to ensure your child’s success by reviewing this checklist and working on any skills your child needs to practice.  It may also be useful in determining whether you child is ready to enter the Early Childhood Program at St. Joseph School.

Nursery School

Arrival:

_____Children should be able to unzip and take off their coats.

_____Children should be able to unzip their backpack and take things out of their backpack.

Circle Time, Story Time, Daily Lesson, Music & Movement Activities:

_____Children should be able to sit in their own space without touching or disturbing others.

Centers, Project Time:

_____Children should be able to color to fill in a shape using a back and forth motion.

_____Children should begin to identify colors and shapes.

_____Children should begin to recognize their printed name.

_____Children should practice holding a crayon and pencil properly.

_____Children should practice using scissors.

Free Play:

_____Children should be able to keep their hands to themselves.

_____Children should be able to stop playing with toys when they are told and to assist friends and teachers in putting toys back where they belong.

Snack & Lunch Time:

_____Children should be able to sit in a chair properly, keeping their hands and their food to themselves.

_____Children should be able to open and close their lunchbox.

_____Children should be able to open and close containers in their lunchbox once they have been shown how to do so.

_____Children should be able to ask for assistance if they are unable to open or close something in their lunchbox.

_____Children should be able to clean up their food at the conclusion of the meal.

Bathroom:

_____Children should be able to pull their pants up and down without assistance.

_____Children should be able to use toilet paper and flush when they are finished without assistance.

_____Children should be able to wash and dry their hands.

_____Children should be able to voice when they need to use the bathroom.

_____Children should be able to follow verbal directions for changing themselves if they have an accident.

Dismissal:

_____Children should be able to put their coat on using the flip method.

_____Children should be able to put their lunchbox and folder in their backpack, and zip it closed.

_____Children should practice putting their backpacks on properly.

Pre-Kindergarten

Children entering the Pre-Kindergarten program at St. Joseph School are expected to have the Nursery skills listed above in addition to the skills listed below.

_____Children should be able to identify primary colors.

_____Children should be able to identify basic shapes.

_____Children should be able to recognize their printed first name.

_____Children should be able to use scissors safely.

_____Children should be able to use a glue stick properly.

_____Children should be able to take care of toileting needs without assistance.

_____Children should be able to put clothing, including coats, on without assistance.
