5th Grade Social Studies
This is a year when students are starting to enhance their general understanding of the Western Hemisphere and the United States. Expectations of students vary from using text based evidence to support claims in their writing assignments, connecting geography to culture & civilizations, and lastly understanding cause and effect relationships with events in history.
The first topic of study with be the “Early People of the Americas”, discussing the first Native American tribes in North and South America. Then moving through to European Exploration and the relationships European nations maintained with the Mayans, Incans, and Aztecs. This unit will also involve the Columbian Exchange and various trade routes from the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. There will also be discussions ranging from geography, government, economy and culture of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Towards the end of the year there will be a look into the early British Colonies and other important events within American History.
Read workbook pages 130-133 and answer questions, due on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

Read workbook pages 144-149, and answer ALL questions in that section of the book. All work will be collected and graded on Thursday, April 27, 2017.
