My name is Mrs. Maureen Carnavos and I will be your child's teacher this year in Second Grade. This is my 29th year teaching in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and my 20th year at St. Joseph School. Prior to teaching at this school, I have taught in several schools in Brooklyn Diocese in grades kindergarten through grade six. I have also been a catechist in the Religious Education Program in my parish and at St. Joseph for over 30 years preparing children to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation, and have given a number of workshops to prepare new teachers and catechists to teach Religion. It has been a privilege to work in an environment where I can share my faith, knowledge, and experience with children and with my colleagues.
I received both my Bachelor of Science degree and my Master's of Science degree in Elementary Education from St. John's University in Queens. During my career, I have strived to remain current in all educational trends by participating in numerous workshops and classes in Literacy, Science, Child Study, Math, Religion, and Technology in the classroom. My goal has always been to help develop independent learners who have a love for knowledge. I strive to help the children reach their full potential by recognizing each of their unique learning styles and talents, incorporating different techniques and materials, and setting a tone of mutual respect and love. A sense of humor helps also!
On a personal note, I am a mother of two children who also were blessed with the gift of a Catholic elementary school and high school. Both children are now successful adults who are very active in their own parish and have fond memories of their education in the Catholic School System. I couldn't be prouder of both of them!
Second Grade is an important milestone in your child's education. We will prepare to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion and embark upon a curriculum filled with new discoveries, interesting and fun activities, and opportunities for each child to grow spiritually, academically, and socially.
I look forward to working together to ensure that your child achieves success.
